Quick Facts

Runway Removal and Recycling
The removal of the 50,000 feet of runways and taxiways began on May 12, 2006, and is expected to take three years. All recyclable materials from the three-foot deep runways, approximately 3.3 million tons, will be recycled and reused onsite.

Water
The creation of wetlands, enhanced riparian habitat and natural treatment systems will help conserve and protect the area’s water supply while providing additional habitat opportunities for wildlife.

Wildlife Corridor
The Wildlife Corridor will provide dedicated open space for wildlife to migrate between the mountains and coastal regions of south Orange County. This important corridor will also reconnect fragmented habitat and promote biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.

Circulation and Traffic Impacts
Circulation and traffic impacts will be mitigated by the use of five primary entrances, a "Park Once, Spend the Day" design approach, alternative forms of transportation, interlinking multi-use trail connections, and a Transit-Oriented Development District.

Base Contaminants and Cleanup
The Department of the Navy has responsibility for contaminant cleanup at the Base. An advisory board meets every two months at Irvine City Hall to discuss cleanup efforts. For more info go to: http://www.bracpmo.navy.mil/bracbases/california/eltoro/default.aspx

Trail Connectivity
The Park will include an extensive trail network with connections to adjacent multi-use trails and bikeways.

Planting Palette
A broad planting palette will be used to reflect the public’s interest in education, conservation, and recreation. The Park will serve as a "living laboratory" a place where people will have an opportunity to learn about the natural environment, native plants, and sustainability.

Accessibility
Park facilities will be accessible and features will be designed with accessibility options. Alternate modes of transportation will be available to park visitors, including a shuttle service for accessing the Great Canyon.

Sustainability Standards
Twelve sustainability standards were developed to serve as a guide in the planning and operation of the park. These standards cover areas related to renewable energy, recycled materials, water conservation, biodiversity, air quality, inclusion, stewardship, heritage, health and transit.

Veterans Memorial
The Park will include a Veterans Memorial, honoring the thousands of men and women who served our country.
